Prepare Your Car For A Road Trip 1

Whether you are hitting the road with your best mates or are taking the family on a holiday, road trips can be a lot of fun. But the one thing that can ruin the whole experience is failing to prepare your vehicle. You see; if you are driving for a few hours or more, your car needs to be in tip top shape because it will be put under more strain than usual. But don’t panic because this article covers all of the main areas that you should be paying attention to and a couple that many of us don’t even think about.

Full check-up –

It is probably a great idea to book your car in for a service before the road trip. Ask your local garage to check all of the levels and also look at the brakes. They will be able to ensure your car is safe and you will eliminate any doubt from your mind thanks to their expertise. You can do a few checks yourself including the wipers and the washer levels.

Battery –

This should be in great condition and if your battery light is staying on after the car has started, you may need to look into a replacement. Although modern batteries should be fine for at least 5 years, perhaps yours has had its day and needs to be changed for a new one.

Tyres –

These are probably just as important as your brakes because if your tyres are worn, you will not be able to control your car effectively. Look at the tread and also the tyre walls need to be free of any bumps or defects.

Bring supplies –

Okay, food and water are a must but you should also bring some form of a torch, some blankets and an emergency first aid kit just in case of any mishaps.

Pack light –

Try not to bring the kitchen sink because an overloaded car will not only use way too much fuel, it will also be harder to control. The braking distance will be increased and the suspension will be put under more stress than necessary.

Sat Nav –

even if you have been to your destination many times before, what happens if you are forced to take a detour? Your GPS system can offer alternative routes and may save you hours and a whole load of stress.

Breaks –

Remember to stop at least every 2 hours and this will allow you to drive in a more alert and safe manner and also provide comfort break opportunities for you and your passengers.

Drive safely –

Ensure that you allow plenty of time for your trip because if you are rushing around, you will not be driving with safety in mind. You will also save fuel if you drive at a more sedate pace and may even enjoy the road trip as a bonus.

Lastly, ensure you car has been fully valeted. If you do have the time or the equipment to do a proper job, then contact a car valeting specialist to complete the task for you.
